MESSAGE IN A SPIRAL

Laura draws a spiral.
Starting small in the center,
her five-year-old hand guides the pen
Around and around she traces the curves.
The concentric circles bloom on the page.

How elemental the design,
the coil whose curves transmit life's mysteries.
I've seen this same spiral on stones in Arizona.
enscribed by ancestors lost in the past,
today read by tourists tracing their genes.

In what gene of this child
was this knowledge embedded?
She traces the intricacy of existence itself
and hands it to me, her grandmother,
as her gift of infinity.
